80% Sporadic

June 29, 2009 I left work early to get a much overdue mammogram. I wasn't worried because in my mind I shouldn't even have to be doing it. I wasn't even 40! But, my doctor had insisted so I went.

The mammogram place has always bugged me. (Everything is pink and flowery and the furniture is not comfortable. I really hate pink.) This trip was different though. I went in at 2:00 and walked out a little after 5:00, 9 films, 2 sonograms, and a probable diagnosis of breast cancer later. I also got an appointment for a biopsy. It was a full afternoon. Since then, nothing has been the same.

One of the most unbelievable parts of it all is this: 80% of all Breast Cancer occurs in Women with NO Family History of the disease. They call it sporadic. I had never heard that statistic! Who knew? Did YOU? I think if more women knew that, they'd never miss a mammogram. I certainly wouldn't have. That's reason #1 for this blog. If just one woman gets a mammogram that she might not have otherwise, I've done my job.

Yaay! We fixed the comments ;)

I didn't know that statistic... I'm 33, and I guess my first mammogram is coming up soon... and now we know where the blog title came from :)
